Filmed in Supermarionation

Working with the team at Century 21 Films, Gazelle Automations’ Justin T. Lee art directed this feature documentary about the history of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s enduring Supermarionation TV programmes. The documentary’s look strived to capture the bold design and Technicolor palette of shows like Thunderbirds, Stingray, and Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons.

The film’s on-screen narrators — Thunderbirds characters Lady Penelope, Parker and Brains — were puppeteered by Justin, with additional help from Gazelle Automations’ Lindsay Lee. The aim of these new puppet scenes was for them to look and feel like the original 1960s series, and techniques used here were further refined and improved in 2015 for the Thunderbirds anniversary episodes.

The documentary was distributed by Network Distributing and premiered at the British Film Institute in October 2014. It’s since aired a number of times on Sky Arts in the UK and is currently available on Blu-ray and DVD.
